Guidelines for the supervision of undergraduate projects

Staff handbook: Guidelines for

For each project student a supervisor is expected to:

  • agree the aims and objectives of the project with the student supervisor by week two of semester one,

  • give guidance on the methods to be employed in the project,

  • be available to each student for one hour each week during term time from week one of semester one until the project is submitted,

  • regularly update the student on their progress towards the project’s objectives (if, in the view of the supervisor, progress is unsatisfactory then the student should be informed of this in writing),

  • keep a record of each meeting using co-tutor,

  • give advice on the preparation of the interim presentation,

  • comment in detail on at least one draft of the dissertation.

A project student is expected to:

  • agree the aims and objectives of the project with the supervisor by week two of semester one,

  • work independently on their project,

  • be punctual and attend agreed meetings (and to inform the supervisor by email if this is not possible through illness or other good cause),

  • keep a record of comments and suggestions made by the supervisor,

  • submit a draft dissertation to the supervisor for comment no less than three weeks before the submission deadline,

  • inform the supervisor immediately if academic or personal difficulties arise that are likely to affect the progress of the project.
